BOOKING DIVISION

The Sheriff's Office assumed responsibility for processing arrestees on July 1, 1996, a task formerly performed by the Metro Police Department. This change had been discussed for more than ten years and finally came to fruition.

Previously, both the Police and Sheriff's staff inventoried property, photographed offenders, and performed very similar data entry functions on all incoming arrestees. Now these functions are performed once, and the information is shared between departments. In addition to eliminating duplicating functions between the two departments, police officers can now get back out on the streets faster since they do not have to stay with an offender throughout the entire booking process.

The operation processes approximately 65,158 arrestees yearly and books an average of 19,789 citations. Before, only individuals charged with serious crimes were identified by gathering their fingerprints. The new booking system fingerprints all new arrestees and individuals who receive citations. This will help solve outstanding criminal cases and also reduce the number of outstanding criminal warrants.
