EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION

CORRECTIONAL OFFICER I
STARTING SALARY $30,349.00

Correctional Officers provide security in a correctional facility and oversee the care and well-being of inmates. This position is required to work shifts, holidays and weekends. Days off rotate each month.

Applicants must possess a high school diploma or GED, and must not have been convicted of any felony or misdemeanor relating to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, or any controlled substance.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential duties which include but are not limited to:
  • Restraining inmates
  • Defending themselves and others against physical attacks
  • Monitoring inmate movement and activities
  • Conducting searches of inmates, cells, and visitors
  • Standing for extended periods
  • Preparing reports and disciplinary write-ups

 

The selection process includes the following:
  • Civil Service examination  -  Applicants must score in the Outstanding category.
    NOTE: This test is approximately 3½ - 4 hours long.
  • Preliminary background check and employment verification.
  • Panel interview and submission of a writing sample
  • Interview by Human Resources Manager

 

Applicants who are hired for the six-week training class are given a conditional offer of employment, which is contingent upon successful completion of the remaining phases of the Davidson County Sheriff's Office employment selection process which includes the following:
  • Complete criminal background check
  • Reference check
  • Drug test
  • Physical examination
  • Academic requirements on training tests
  • Six-month probationary period

 

The Civil Service examination is administered at 9:30 a.m.on the first Thursday of each month at the Sheriff's Office Jerry Newson Center.  Applicants must contact Metro Nashville's Human Resources Department to arrange to take a Civil Service examination and must bring the following items with them to the exam:
  • Completed application  -  An application can be completed at the testing site. If an application is obtained prior to testing, the completed application must be turned it at the time of testing and must not be sent to DCSO Human Resources.  UPDATE:  The application process for Metro has recently changed. All Correctional Officer applicants must apply online with Metro HR by clicking here.
  • Proof that the applicant possesses a high school diploma or a GED  -  A copy of the appropriate document must be given to the tester, and will not be returned.
  • A DD-214, if the applicant has prior military experience
