Position Description Benefits Supplemental Questions

This position is with the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office. A Correctional Officer assists with securing and overseeing the care and well-being of inmates housed in a correctional facility. Performs related duties as required.
Typical Duties:
Assisting with securing and overseeing care and well-being of inmates. Monitoring inmate movement within a facility. Conducting searches of cells, inmates and visitors. Preparing reports. Submitting appropriate incident and disciplinary write-ups. Supervising inmate work assignments. Overseeing the feeding of inmates. Providing inmate security at hospitals, courts, and other assigned destinations. Assisting with inmate processing as needed. May transport inmates to various locations. WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress that require a range of safety and other precautions. Employee works in a correctional environment that requires physical stamina and exposure to hazardous and stressful situations. Employees may be required to work varying shifts and weekends and must be able to defend themselves or others against physical attack.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or state issued G.E.D. – EDUCATIONAL DOCUMENTS MUST BE ATTACHED TO ONLINE APPLICATION 21 years of age U.S. Citizen Valid “Class D” Driver’s License may be required for some positions. Applicants who have served in any branch of the military MUST provide a copy of their DD214 long-form. Any discharge status other than “honorable” may preclude you from being considered for employment due to state law under T.C.A 41-4-144. – * If you received an Entry Level Separation or General Discharge under Honorable Conditions, you may be eligible to apply for a waiver. Provide all relevant documentation along with your DD214 and attach to online application. Per state law any applicant who has been convicted of, or has pleaded guilty to, or has entered a plea of nolo contendere to any felony charge or to any violation of any federal or state laws or municipal ordinances relating to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor or controlled substances will not be considered for employment. A Written Examination will be administered as part of the qualifying process. Invitations to the examination are emailed to qualified candidates. Be sure your email address is up-to-date. Testing is tentatively scheduled for the week of June 24-28, 2013. Interested candidates should make every effort to be available to participate in testing during the designated dates. Candidates passing the written exam will be invited to participate in the physical standards test – tentatively scheduled for late July. Candidates attending the physical standards test must pass both parts of the test to be placed on the eligibility register. Sheriff Hall Speaks at Spring Back Nashville’s 30,000 Mattress Celebration

Sheriff Hall was asked to speak at the Spring Back 30,000 Mattress Celebration, held on May 7 in Nashville. Spring Back is a mattress recycling program that began at Belmont University in 2011. Through the program, previously incarcerated and homeless workers are taught valuable skills while employed at a facility where mattresses are dismantled and their materials recycled for use in new products. Since its inception, 30,000 mattresses have been recycled and hundreds of tons of waste saved from landfills.

DCSO inmate work crews help deliver mattresses to the facility each month and also handle debris pick-up and haul away. Several former inmates hold full-time jobs currently at the Spring Back facility.

The family of officer Robert Walton, who passed away in August 2012, was also honored at this month’s Administrative meeting.

Each month, DCSO compiles a report of the average daily populations in its network of jail facilities. We are pleased to provide highlights from this monthly report here online. Please click on the link below for the report currently available.

How This Report Came to Be
Every inmate in a Davidson County jail is classified in several different ways, including a classification according to the nature of the charge(s) against him/her. This information is used for a variety of purposes within DCSO, but for the “Average Daily Population Report”, each inmate is counted once, according to the most serious charge currently against him/her.

The daily numbers that make up the monthly average come from nightly population counts.

When this report was initiated, it was established that certain classifications are to be reported specifically, while others (those used less frequently and, as you will see, comprising a small portion of the population) are reported as a group.

The report is normally produced internally for each month by the 10th of the following month, and we make every effort to have it published here as quickly as possible.

DCSO P.A.W.S. Program to be Featured on Metro3 Series

Metro3′s new series, “Get to Know Metro” will focus on the DCSO PAWS program in an upcoming episode. The PAWS (Pets Adopted Will Survive) program is a therapeutic program for inmates that combines the association of animal and offenders to foster a positive approach to life issues. Both the inmate and the animals benefit in numerous ways and the program has been very successful since its inception in 2001.

On May 1, crews filmed the building of shelters, inmates working with animals at MACC, and interviewed both participants of the program and Sheriff Hall.
